A simple example to explain your thought processes in depression could be – imagine your thought processes are like two roads which are parallel to each other. Your thoughts have just strayed, for whatever reason, onto the negative road which causes you to feel bad. Our task is simply to get your thought process to start, little by little, to stray back onto the positive road. It does take a little time (8 – 12 weeks) and some commitment from you, but it may comfort you to know that many of my depression clients completely recover in a very short time span.
The Method For Overcoming Depression
Here are the steps I usually work through with each depression client –
- Firstly, we find the “light at the end of the tunnel” – in other words, what’s your perfect outcome? How do you look, sound and feel when you are completely free of your depression? We spend some time visualising that in great detail, so vividly that it seems real.
- Secondly, we make a self-hypnosis cd with you which has personal references included in it. Listening to this recording each day helps you to practice what it feels like to be free of your depression.
- Thirdly, we go in search of the “root cause” of your problem – that event, or series of events that led you into the negative thought patterns that you suffer from. Once we find these, we work at releasing the emotions that are trapped there which in turn helps you to feel better.

As the well-known author and hypnotherapist Paul McKenna rather famously says “What we practice, we become.” So if you want to be free of depression, it follows that you must practice that regularly. There is some work to do as we work through the process, but it’s worth doing. Many people find that hypnotherapy takes much less time than traditional counselling to achieve the kind of successful results you desire. Typically, hypnotherapy for depression lasts no longer than 8 to 12 weekly sessions (one per week).
