Fears And Phobias – What Is A Fear?
Fear is an unpleasant emotional response to a real (or perceived) external threat or danger. The most common physical reactions of fear include:
- Rapid heart rate
- Increased blood pressure
- Tightening of muscles
- Sharpening or redirected senses
- Dilation of the pupils (to let in more light)
- Increased sweating
Muscles used for physical movement are tightened and primed with oxygen, in preparation for a physical fight-or-flight response. When a fear stimulus occurs unexpectedly, the victim of the fear response could possibly jump or give a small start. The person’s heart-rate and heartbeat may quicken, preparing to fight, or run away.
Fear is commonly classified into two types:
- External fear is caused by something outside of you which you are strongly motivated to avoid – eg. fear of spiders
- Internal fear is something outside of your control that you link to a negative emotion – eg. fear developed out of low self-esteem
Fear is essentially rational. It’s like a voice saying “You need to protect yourself” or “You need to take action”.

Fears And Phobias – What Is A Phobia?
A Phobia is an irrational, intense and persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things, animals, or people which is completely out of proportion to the object or situation that causes the fear. In reality most phobias are irrational, in the sense that they are thought to be dangerous, but in reality are not threatening to survival in any way. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared stimulus.
Psychologists and psychiatrists classify most phobias into three categories. These are:
- Social Phobia – fears involving other people or social situations such as performance anxiety or fears of embarassment by scrutiny of others, such as eating in public
- Specific Phobias – fear of a single, specific panic trigger such as spiders, snakes, dogs, water, heights, flying, catching a specific illness, etc. Many people have these fears, but to a lesser degree than those who suffer from specific phobias. People with the phobias specifically avoid the entity they fear.
- Agoraphobia – a generalised fear of leaving home, or a small, familiar “safe” area, and of possible panic attacks that might follow.
