Agoraphobics can have panicky feelings when on wide open roads or in large shopping centres or out and about on a busy street and can quite easily catastrophise and imagine the worst possible outcome happening (which, of course, makes the fear worse).

The good news is that you can overcome agoraphobia because it is just a learned behaviour in response to either repeated exposure to anxiety causing situations or perhaps can even be rooted in emotional conflict during childhood.

Causes Of Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia or fear of open spaces can originate in a number of ways. It is quite common for agoraphobia to develop as a result of repeated situations where you felt anxiety, and in essence, “learned” how to do the anxiety. It can also possibly originate from your relationship with your parents during childhood in situations where you might have felt significantly different emotions for each parent.

Symptoms Of Agoraphobia

The symptoms are common to most phobias and can include

  • Palpitations / heart beating faster
  • Sweaty hands / excessive sweating
  • Difficulty breathing / breathing faster
  • Chest feeling tight
  • Legs trembling
  • Shaking

Important Note: It is very important NOT to self-diagnose – while the symptoms mentioned above may indicate a phobic response, they can also be an indicator or a more serious medical problem. It is always in your best interests to consult your GP in the first instance in order to rule out any medical reason for your symptoms. Once you have eliminated any possible medical reasons for the problem, then (and only then) is hypnotherapy appropriate.
